Islamorada isn’t known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World accidentally -warm Gulf Stream waters bring a wide variety of game fish toward the islands every season, making the FL Keys an international gateway for career and recreational hunters alike. Whether you enjoy trolling the depths or shallow-water fishing in the still waters of the backcountry flats, Islamorada has the kind of fishing you’ve been needing.
More fishing championships are held in the Keys than anywhere else in the U.S and provide a venue to observe other generations, test your techniques, and who knows even get some fame and fortune. There are surprisingly no fewer than ten different championships going on from Key Largo to Key West a month, targeting everything from swordfish to tarpon. Several fishing tournaments are created for lady anglers or for kids, and many profit familiar charities.
Backcountry guides will drive an angler to the most prime locations for tarpon, permit, and bonefish, all of which are just great for both releasing and eating. Offshore charters are the correct fashion for big game seekers to critter marlin, mahi mahi, tuna, and sailfish. Some charters offer through the night charters in boats up to fifty feet with luxury amenities, e.g. full kitchens. Reef fishing for grouper and snapper keeps you closer to port and almost ensures you’ll eat well very soon.
Getting Ready for Your Fishing Escapade
When deciding on a charter company, decide whether you need to bring your own tackle or have it supplied for you, and learn about the accessibility of bait and live well capacities. Know your ability and experience levels and select a captain accordingly, since you don’t want him giving you a fishing pole and a pail of squid and departing, or taking about basics if you’re a longtime angler. Most captains will readily address a range of skill levels, but it’s best to ask before choosing your guide.
Never fail to bring sunscreen with an spf of at least 15 and a camera so you can catch and release but still illustrate your adventure stories after you fish. Release anything you has no reason to consume because over fishing at present will strip the regions for future anglers. If you’re not going to eat your catch, return it to the water as readily as you can; likewise the more rapidly you might reel your catch in (the less time it spends fighting), the healthier it will be when returned to the sea.
Info & Tricks
Hunters who want dolphin had better get started at sunrise, shoot for about one hundred twenty feet of water, and look for diving birds or drifts of floating sea grasses. Producing chum slicks helps attract tiny fish, and whenever you’ve got a grunt or some other tiny fish on your line, leave it on the line since the dolphin will be drawn to it. Dolphin move through areas at a fast pace, so it helps to drive towards other watercrafts and constantly troll rather than staying in one spot.
Amberjacks put up a awesome fight and can take hours for even an experienced guide to reel up. Go for heavy jacks at wide wrecks in upwards of 100 feet of water, and young fish close to the reefs in the winter. Use a leader of 18 to 25 feet and minimum 50 lb. test, and get live bait if you are able to. Don’t relax your grip on your rod, or you’ll release it when when one of the amberjacks hit the bait.
Most people say the quickest way to critter a barracuda is with a tube lure in close to fifteen to twenty five feet of water, and to keep the lure going through the water or the fish will become untrusting and wary. While barracuda are a nifty sport fish because they’ll put up a fantastic fight, they’re ordinarily not eaten. Lots of of the larger fish (over 5 lbs.) have grown to be poisonous to humans because of their diet of reef algae. Ciguatera poisoning is rarely fatal, but never desirable. Small barracuda can be sliced into steaks and consumed.
The Florida Keys Lobster
The spiny lobster mini-season pulls lobster-lovers from all over the globe, so one must gather your reservations and schedule beforehand. These lobsters move in the ocean from Brazil to Bermuda, but a lot of them lives in the Keys expanses. When you trap one, see that your net or bag is handy before they zoom away, because these creatures jet off by jetting backwards through the water. Bring your lobster to most Keys restaurants and they’ll prepare it for you, or just order theirs and enjoy the taste without the labor. Key West lobster are very similar in taste and texture to Maine lobster, only tinier. They’re wonderful boiled, steamed, or grilled, and sold whole, as tails, and as meat in many local stores.
The two-day Sport Lobster Season is held the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday and ending Thursday at midnight. The newest dates are:
-
July 27 - 28, 2005
- July 26 - 27, 2006
- July 25 - 26, 2007
During this time, there’s a ban on diving and snorkeling within 300 feet of marinas, canals, and private shorelines to check harm done by overzealous lobster hunters. They instill bag limits, restricted areas, and equipment specifications. For complete and new laws, please call the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission at 850-488-4676 .
The commercial lobster season occurs from August to March. Only commercial license holders may trap lobster & stone crabs, and Florida no longer prints commercial licenses. Existing licenses must be sought out from another angler.
