Islamorada isn’t known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World accidentally -warm Gulf Stream waters bring in a great variety of game fish toward the islands each year, making our own tropical paradise an international focal point for serious and amateur fishing nuts alike. Whether you experience trolling offshore or flats fishing in the shallow backcountry flats, Islamorada has the catch of a lifetime you’ve been shopping for.

More fishing championships are held in the Keys than anywhere else in nationally and offer a good opportunity to discover other fishermen, test your skills, and possibly even get some fame and fortune. There are oftentimes over ten different competitions happening from Key Largo to Key West every month, targeting anything from dolphinfish to tarpon. In addition, you can see fishing tournaments are planned for female anglers or for youngsters, and many profit familiar charities.

Backcountry guides can take anybody to the most select patches for tarpon, permit, and bonefish, all of which are super for both game and eating. Offshore charters are the best way for big game anglers to fish for marlin, mahi mahi, tuna, and sailfish. A few charters supply through the night trips in watercrafts up to fifty^ with fancy comforts, like global response center. Reef fishing for grouper and snapper keeps you closer to port and virtually ensures you’ll dine well that evening.

Preparing for Your Fishing Trip

When finding a charter company, decide whether you need to use your own tackle or have it provided for you, and ask about the level of bait and live well capacities. Determine your capability and personal experience levels and find a captain accordingly, since you don’t want the captain just handing you a pole and a box of squid and then going away, or discussing basics if you’re a longtime angler. Most captains will by nature handle a range of skill levels, but it’s best to really know before deciding on your guide.

Don^t forget to bring spf 15 or higher and a camera so you can catch and release but still tell everyone about your adventure stories after you fish. Release the fish you won^t eat because over fishing today will wipe out the ocean for future anglers. If you’re not going to cook your fish, return the fish to the water as soon as you can; don^t forget, the faster you will pull your fish in (the less time it spends struggling), the stronger it will be when returned to the sea.

Tips & Secrets

Hunters on a quest for dolphin have got to leave the dock very very early, aim for more or less 120 feet of water, and drive towards diving birds or drifts of floating sea grasses. Creating chum slicks helps pull in bait fish, and once you’ve got a jack or some other bait fish on your line, leave it on the line since the dolphin will be attracted to it. Dolphin traverse through areas quick, so it helps to go for other watercrafts and constantly troll rather than plunking down on one spot.

Amberjacks put up a swell fight and may take a long time for even an experienced guide to bring into the boat. Look for heavy big Jacks at prominent shipwrecks in over one hundred^ of water, and juveniles around the reefs in the winter. Use a leader of 18 to 25 feet and equal to or more than 50 lb. test, and take live bait if you will be able to. Don’t slack off on your pole, or you’ll let it slip through your fingers when the fish hit the hook.

Most people say the speediest way to try for a barracuda is with a tube lure in close to 15 to 25 feet of water, and to keep the tackle going through the water or the catch will become untrusting and wary. While barracuda are a substantial sport fish because they’ll put up a strong fight, they’re more often than not not very tasty. Nearly all of the heavier fish (over 5 lbs.) have turned out to be poisonous to human beings due to their diet of reef algae. Ciguatera poisoning is almost never calamitous, but never desirable. Small barracuda can be cut into steaks and consumed.

The Florida Keys Lobster

The spiny lobster mini-season draws in lobster-lovers from all over the globe, so be certain that you arrange your reservations and agenda early. These lobsters wander around the expanses from Brazil to Bermuda, although a bulk of them winds up in the Key West ocean. As soon as you trap one, make sure your net or bag is ready at hand before they escape, because these crawfish get away by spurting backwards through the water. Bring your critter to most Key West restaurants and they’ll serve it up for you, or just order theirs and savour the taste without the effort. Key West lobster are very similar in taste and texture to Maine lobster, only tinier. They’re tremendous boiled, steamed, or grilled, and sold whole, as tails, and as meat in many neighborhood markets.

The two-day Sport Lobster Season takes place the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday and ending Thursday at midnight. Upcoming dates are:

  • July 27 - 28, 2005
  • July 26 - 27, 2006
  • July 25 - 26, 2007

During this period, there’s a prohibition on diving and snorkeling within 300 feet of marinas, canals, and private shorelines to halt harm done by rabid lobster hunters. There will be bag limits, restricted areas, and dive gear ordinations. For thorough and new regulations, please get in touch with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission at 850-488-4676 .

The commercial lobster season takes place from August to March. Only commercial license holders may trap lobster & stone crabs, and Florida no longer sells commercial licenses. Existing licenses must be bought from another angler.
